The Essential Question Is...

How Do People Overcome Obstacles?

History-Making Women

Have you ever heard of the Nobel Peace Prize? In every year since 1901, people have been nominated to win the Nobel Peace Prize. To be nominated means that you are chosen to be part of a vote. There are many reasons that someone could be nominated. For example, a person could be nominated for helping to end a war or for fighting for human rights.

The prize can also be shared by two or three people. This year, three people shared the award. This is only the second time this has happened in the history of the Nobel Peace Prize.

The winners this year are Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee, and Tawakkol Karman. Click on the map below to learn more about how each winner has helped others overcome obstacles in their country.
