The Essential Question Is...

How do sports affect our lives?

Scoring a Goal for the Community

CIV_01A

Many teams and players work the whole year to help in their communities. One of my favorite teams, the Columbus Crew, has a special community organization. It is called the Crew Soccer Foundation. This group raises money to help many community programs. The money is helping build soccer fields for kids who don’t have a place to play. It also helps local kids in need get scholarships, soccer gear, and even free tickets to games! Crew players have also helped build houses for families without homes and worked in neighborhoods to clean up litter.

One Crew player who does a lot of work in the community is Tommy Heinemann. When he’s not scoring goals, Tommy works hard to help his city and the people who live there. Tommy visits recreation centers and hospitals. He also volunteers to serve meals at a local homeless shelter.

My community loves to cheer for our team and its players. But as you can see, sports can bring our community together in many other ways. Long after the final whistle blows, I know that my favorite players are working hard to make my community a better place. And that is a great goal for all of us!
