The History of Nuclear Technology
In March 2011, a powerful earthquake and tsunami hit parts of Japan. These disasters destroyed entire towns and damaged a nuclear power plant in the city of Fukushima. In this TLX News update, we’ll explore where nuclear power comes from and how it affects our lives. We’ll also explore how the Japanese people are responding to these disasters.
But first, we thought it would be helpful for you to know what energy is, so you can understand the rest of the update. Energy is found in everything from a blade of grass to a space shuttle blasting off. You use energy in everything you do, whether it is playing basketball, making dinner, or sleeping!
All energy sources are either renewable or nonrenewable. Energy sources that will never run out are called renewable. These sources of energy include sunlight, wind, and water. Nonrenewable energy sources come out of the ground. Once these energy sources are used, they cannot be replaced. Nonrenewable sources of energy include oil, coal, and uranium.
Energy comes in many forms you may already know, such as heat, light, motion, and electrical. Nuclear is another form of energy. You will learn more about nuclear energy in this issue of TLX News.
