Unit 5: Field Trip - Albany, NY

The City of Albany has been the capital of New York State since 1797 and is home to many buildings and museums, which display information and artifacts from New York's rich history. Many of these buildings are located around the Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza.

The New York State Museum

The New York State Museum is located directly across from the Capitol building and contains collections of artifacts from New York State History. In addition, the museum contains the state library along with the state archives.

The Performing Arts Center

The Performing Arts Center is also known as the "Egg" because of its unusual shape. Inside of the "Egg" are two theaters, which are used for concerts and large theater performances.

The Executive Mansion

Since 1877, the Executive Mansion has been the home of New York's governors. The mansion has been remodeled and expanded many times since the property was bought by the state. Twenty-nine New York governors have lived in this fascinating and historic house.

The New York State Capitol

After taking 32 years to construct, the New York State Capitol was completed in 1899 for a final cost of $25 million dollars. As the meeting place for the New York State Assembly, the capitol is well known for its beautiful rooms and remains one of the most recognizable State Capitols in all of the United States.
