Hiawatha
1500s
Historians believe that Hiawatha was a member of the Onondaga group. What we know about Hiawatha comes from stories told by the Iroquois. Some of these stories are legends. We do know that he helped bring the Iroquois together.
Hiawatha convinced the Iroquois nations to join a league. The league made laws based on fairness and justice. Hiawatha’s actions showed the Iroquois the power of justice and peace.

Tribes of the Iroquois Nation
Hiawatha united five different tribes of Native Americans into the Iroquois Nation. Later a sixth tribe was added. Learn more about each of these tribes.
