Unit 4: Field Trip JEFFERSON CITY

Jefferson City has been the capital of Missouri since 1821. The city was named after our third president, Thomas Jefferson. Many of the important decisions that affect our daily lives are made here.






COLE COUNTY HISTORICAL MUSEUM

The Cole County Museum features a collection of inaugural ball gowns worn by past first ladies of the state. It is also home to 19th-century furniture and Civil War relics.

GOVERNOR’S MANSION

Across the street from the Cole County Historical Museum stands a large Victorian mansion. This mansion is home to Missouri’s governor. Many famous and influential people have visited the mansion, including General George Custer, British Prime Minister Edward Heath, Harry Truman and Jefferson Davis.

ALL MISSOURI VETERANS MEMORIAL

Located on the northeast corner of the Capitol grounds, the All Missouri Veterans Memorial offers a beautiful view for its visitors. It has a limestone colonnade, reflecting pools, a waterfall and a walking path.

MISSOURI STATE CAPITOL BUILDING

The Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City was rebuilt for the third time in 1911. The building had been destroyed by fire. The capitol overlooks the Missouri River. The House Lounge is decorated with murals painted by artist Thomas Hart Benton.
