Pioneer Daniel Boone, 1734?1820
|
Daniel Boone was born in western Pennsylvania. The young boy learned how to survive in the wilderness around his home. At 16, Boone's family moved to North Carolina. In 1756, he married Rebecca Bryan. Boone tried farming but didn't like it. Farming was too tame for Boone. He liked life on the wild frontier. He explored Tennessee and Kentucky in the early 1700s. Boone helped build the Wilderness Road. In 1775, Boone founded Boonesboro, Kentucky.
Boone also helped the Patriots in the American Revolution. In 1776, he led the Kentucky militia. In 1778, Boone and his men were captured by Shawnee. The Indians took the group to the British. The quick-thinking Boone gained the trust of the Shawnee. He learned of a British plan to attack Boonesboro. He escaped in time to save the town.
After the war, Boone and his family moved farther west. In 1799, they settled in what is now Missouri. Boone never stopped hunting or exploring the wilderness. He died in 1820.
