Explorer James Beckwourth guided travelers to California.

James Beckwourth

California Standard 4.3.2 Compare how and why people traveled to California and the routes they traveled (e.g., James Beckwourth, John Bidwell, John C. Fremont, Pio Pico).

Growing up, Beckwourth loved adventure. He wanted to be an explorer and in 1823, Beckwourth joined a group of explorers. While exploring the West, Beckwourth was captured by Crow Native Americans. He became friends with the Crow. They taught him how to survive in the wilderness.

CompassThe things he learned from the Crow helped him guide people to California. In 1850, Beckwourth found an important pass through the Sierra Nevada to California. It is now called Beckwourth Pass.
