Ask students to tell you how they think Daniel Boone found his way to the west. Ask them to tell whether or not they think he used maps. Then share with students that Daniel Boone made maps as he went along so that others who came later would be able to find their way. Share with students that one part of the wilderness that Daniel Boone explored is in the state of Kentucky. With students, locate the state of Kentucky on a map. Show students the picture of the "Wilderness Road" in their textbooks and compare it to your map. Then tell students when Daniel Boone went west, he met many friendly Native American Indians along his way.
