A Day in the Life

California Standard 6.3 Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures of the Ancient Hebrews.

Young boys in ancient Israel went to school to study the Torah and to learn about the meanings of Jewish traditions and holy feasts. They also helped their fathers by doing chores, such as herding animals. Young girls stayed at home and helped their mothers with household duties. Although they were often busy, children in ancient Israel did have some time to play games, such as a form of checkers and chess.

Case Study
Producing Food in Ancient Israel

The most important jobs in an agricultural community would be shared by all family members, including the children. Read about the daily work involved in farming and raising animals in Israel. What jobs do you think were the responsibility of children?

Homes in Early Israel

Homes in early Israel provided shelter and personal space just as homes today. The lower level was use for animals and storage and the upper level for family living space. Several generations often shared one home. Do you or any of your friends live in a home with more than two generations of family members?

Dead Sea Scrolls

The ancient Israelites wrote important religious and government documents on animal skin scrolls. They are an important source of information about life at that time. Children may have helped write some of the scrolls as part of their training for the job.

Making Bread

Bread is an important food for most cultures. Scroll down to the recipe on this Web site to make the kind of bread that a girl in ancient Israel would have made with her mother or grandmother.
