Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo was born to a rich family in Alta California in 1808. At 15, he joined the Mexican Army. Later, he defeated a Native Amercan uprising. He became commander of the Mexican army in Northern California.

Can bugleVallejo did not like the government of Mexico. He thought that the government of the United States would make a good model for a free California.

Despite his views, Vallejo was briefly jailed during the Bear Flag Revolt. Later, squatters took much of his land. Yet he supported the new California. He helped to write California's first Constitution. He also became a state senator.
