 California Standard 4.3.4 Study the lives of women who helped build early California (e.g., Biddy Mason). 

By 1851, California was a free state, where slavery was against the law. A slaveowner named Robert Smith decided to move to Texas, a slave state. Mason went to court to win her freedom from Smith. A judge ruled that Mason and her children were "entitled to their freedom and are free forever."

NurseMason worked very hard as a nurse and midwife in Los Angeles. She saved her money and was able to buy land in 1866. Mason was known for her kindness. She gave freely to those in need.
