One million years ago glaciers, or huge bodies of ice, scraped valleys throughout the Sierra Nevada. The glaciers left tall waterfalls and wide meadows. Both the Sierra Nevada and the valleys are part of Yosemite.

Explore History

At one time, the redwood trees were in danger. Many of them were cut down. The government decided to protect the trees by setting up national parks. In 1968 they made an area of northern California a national park—the Redwood National Park.
