Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He was born in a log cabin in 1809 in Kentucky.

Lincoln and BoyHe loved to read books. He became a lawyer and a senator before he was elected President of the United States.

When he was president, he freed the slaves. He said, "…our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."

Schools and government offices in many states are closed for this holiday. By closing schools and offices, we honor the people who were once president of the United States.
