5.3 American Indians and Settlers

Step 1. Questions

5.3 Students describe the cooperation and conflict that existed among the American Indians and between the Indian nations and the new settlers.

Research the relationship between American Indians and the early settlers of America. Use these questions to guide your research.
  • What was the Pequot War? Who fought in it? What was the conflict?
  • What were the Powhatan Wars? Where did they take place? What was the conflict?
  • What were the King Philip’s Wars? Where and when did they take place? What was the outcome.
For each of the three wars, take notes about who fought, where and when the wars took place and who won. Also think about what the wars tell us about the problems Native Americans and Settlers were having in sharing the land.

To begin, visit the Internet sites listed in Step 2. You may also choose to visit a library, read a book about the subject, or interview an adult. Then follow Step 3 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!
