5.2 Early Explorers in the Americas

Step 1. Questions

5.2 Students trace the routes of early explorers and describe the early explorations of the Americas.

Describe the entrepreneurial characteristics of early explorers (e.g., Christopher Columbus, Francisco Vásquez de Coronado) and the technological developments that made sea exploration by latitude and longitude possible (e.g., compass, sextant, astrolabe, seaworthy ships, chronometers, gunpowder).

Research the routes of early explorers in the Americas and tell what happened during some of the early explorations. Here are some questions to guide your research.
  • Who is Christopher Columbus?
  • Who is Francisco Vasquez de Coronado?
  • What technological developments made sea exploration by longitude and latitutde possible?
To begin, visit the Internet sites listed in Step 2. You may also choose to visit a library, read a book about early exploration, or interview an adult. Then follow Step 3 to write your report.
