Gold Rush Fever (p. 236)

Step 1. Questions

Gold was discovered in California in 1848. Word spread fast. People with "Gold Fever" flooded California. What was life like during the Gold Rush? Would you have traveled by wagon all the way from New York in search of gold?
Here are some questions to think about:
  • What was life like in California during the Gold Rush?
  • Did everyone get rich?
  • What famous people took part in the Gold Rush?
  • Was the Gold Rush a good or bad thing for California and the Forty-Niners?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web site listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above and record your notes in the boxes.

Step 2. Research

Once you've read about the Gold Rush, type your notes in the boxes. Draw some conclusions about the Gold Rush and the people who moved to California. When you draw a conclusion about something, you also use past experience, reasoning, and new information to make conclusions—or general statements—about people, events, or ideas.
