Unit 5: China, a Land of Contrasts

China is one of the largest countries in the world! The wide variety of geography-mountains, highlands, deserts, plains, and rainforests-is home to the largest population in the world. China also has an abundance of natural resources, with each region of China using those resources and producing various goods. Because it is such a large country, China has been controlled by several different groups. Various dynasties ruled China for thousands of years, with the last dynasty ending in 1911. Shortly thereafter, Communists took control of China. The Communists still control China's government today. Life in China is both old and new, with small, rural villages and traditional arts intermixed with fast-paced, modern city life.
