Unit 3: South Africa, the Rainbow Nation

South Africa has all kinds of geographic features, including rain forests, deserts, valleys, mountains, and beaches. South Africa is also home to a wide variety of wildlife. Large amounts of gold and silver are found in South Africa, helping the economy by creating exports and jobs in mining. South Africans also have jobs in factories, on farms, and in the tourism business. In 1948 the white-controlled government of South Africa started the policy of apartheid, which separated the races and treated the black South Africans unfairly. After the end of apartheid, South Africa set up a new government. This new government sought to protect the rights of all of its citizens.
