People and Geography

Studying geography helps us learn about Earth's natural features. Geography affects people's lives in many ways, including their choice of homes, clothing, and transportation. People also affect geography by changing the land and water around them.

Land and Water

The geography of the United States includes different kinds of landforms and bodies of water. The Great Plains, Colorado Plateau, and Rocky Mountains, are examples of landforms. Saltwater oceans and freshwater lakes, rivers, and ponds are examples of bodies of water. All living things need water to live. Landforms affect the way we live. People also affect landforms.

Climate or Weather

Climate describes weather over a long period of time. Weather describes daily conditions, such as rainy or sunny. Communities across the United States have different climate and weather conditions. One way people adapt to their climate is by wearing the right clothes. Some kinds of weather, such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and blizzards, can be very dangerous to people.
