More Simple Machines

Inclined planes are simple machines that make work easier. A ramp is an inclined plane. It is a flat surface that is higher at one end. A wedge is also a simple machine that is made up of two inclined planes placed back to back. A wedge uses force to raise an object or cut objects apart. An axe and a plow are examples of a wedge.

A screw is an inclined plane wrapped into a spiral. The ridges of the screw are threads. The screw moves a longer distance and the less force is needed to do work. An auger is a screw and can drill into a rock.

A compound machine is when two or more machines are put together. A pair of scissors is a compound machine. The scissors are part lever and part wedge. A bicycle is also a compound machine because it uses wheels and axles, and a lever. Both simple and compound machines are similar because they make work easier. They differ in the way that simple machines have few or no moving parts. Compound machines are made up of more than one moving part.
