About the Site

Cat Action Treasury (CAT) is a nonprofit organization for the conservation of the world's 36 wild cat species. This Web site contains excellent photographs and in-depth information about each of the species. When you click an animal's name in the left frame, you will see a large photograph and the animal's name in the various languages. If your class has children from diverse cultures, you may want to invite them to share other names for the animals. Click Description and Behavior and other topics on each cat's page for more information. Since the material is extensive and advanced, you may wish to select simple information, such as size, speed, and habitat, to tell children. Each section has additional clear pictures of the cats in the wild.

What to Do

  1. Ask children to name the wild cats that they know. Make a list on the chalkboard.

  2. At the Web site, have children click Tiger in the left column.

  3. As children view the photographs, read a few of the other names.

  4. If children know any of the other names, invite them to share the words.

  5. Click Description and Behavior. Read or paraphrase selected portions for the class, explaining any unfamiliar words.

  6. Explore the other wild cats that children have named, plus one or two new ones, in the same manner.
