About the Site

This is the children's section of the Web site for the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The site includes information about the museum and online tours.

Lesson Objectives

  • Students will use the Internet to learn about a work of art.

  • Students will dissect the piece and think about its meaning.

  • Students will complete an activity using what they learned about art.

Suggested Additional Activities

  • Have students click on the other pictures on the main page to learn about these works. Have them complete any activity that may be included in the virtual tour.

  • Have students click on The Art Zone on the left side of the main page to create their own online art.

  • Create a classroom museum in one section of the room. Hang student artwork from this theme project together. Have students add other pieces of art that they have made to the collection.

  1. Scroll over "Discover Our Collection" and click on Gallery Highlights. Browse through the different galleries to get an idea of what kind of art is exhibited at the Corning Museum of Glass.
  2. Click on Curator’s Choice in the top navigational bar under "Discover Our Collection." View different pieces of art by clicking on the archives on the left navigational bar then choosing More Information for the different works.
  3. Choose your favorite piece. Draw a sketch of it.
  4. Write a brief summary of the piece. Include who made it, when it was made, what it looks like, and why you like it.
About the Site

The Corning Museum of Glass is a museum in upstate New York that is dedicated to glass artwork. The Web site has several online exhibits.

Lesson Objectives

  • Students will use the Internet to view works of glass art from exhibits in the Corning Museum of Glass.

  • Students will draw a sketch of their favorite piece.

  • Students will use what they learned to summarize the piece of art that they chose.

Suggested Additional Activities

  • Create a class museum of glass. Assemble the student sketches together in one area of the classroom.

  • Have students present their written presentations to the class. Have the audience compare what they hear to the student sketches displayed in the room, to try to determine which piece the student is describing.
