Nigeria-Arts.net is a Web site devoted to Nigerian art. It contains artist biographies and both audio and visual samples of work.

Lesson Objectives

  • Students will use the Internet to learn about Nigerian artists.

  • Students will read about different Nigerian artists.

  • Students will look at examples of Nigerian art.

Suggested Additional Activities

  • Have students click on Music on the left navigational bar and repeat the same process to read about Nigerian musicians. Have students listen to different types of music by these musicians.

  • Ask students to review two types of Nigerian music. Have them describe the elements that make up each type then compare the two.

The Bi-Okoto Drum and Dance Theater is a troupe of African musicians and dancers based in Ohio. The troupe performs throughout Ohio and neighboring states. You may want to explore other links for interesting information about the troupe.

What to Do

  1. Listen to the drumming on the home page. Discuss the feelings of the music.

  2. Discuss reasons people in Nigeria dance. Compare that to why people in the United States dance.

  3. Ask students from cultures represented in class to explain dances performed in their homelands.
