About the Site
Special Olympics sponsors and organizes sports training and competition for individuals who are mentally challenged. The organization provides year-round training and athletic competition for more than one million athletes in nearly 150 countries and all 50 states in the United States. This Special Olympics Web site offers information about programs and services, and profiles several of these remarkable athletes.
What to Do
You may want to have students see photos from the 1999 World Summer Games and read diary excerpts to follow the athletes through the Games.
Have them scroll down the main page to "Meet Special Olympic Athletes" and click the single word here.

Students will think about how a disability would affect a politician today.
Students will listen to a rap song about Roosevelt’s life.
Suggested Additional Activities
Have students click on Education then Puzzles & Activities for games about President Roosevelt. Have them do research on this Web site or others to find the answers.
FDR was not the only president to have a disability; Woodrow Wilson was severely dyslexic. Have students research President Wilson to learn more about his disability.
