Math Topic: Data, Statistics, and Graphs

Grade: 4-6

Materials
Construction paper of various colors, markers, scissors, glue

Setup
Draw a chart on the bulletin board for students to display data from their surveys. Construct a grid for students to complete a bar graph. Label the horizontal axis "Number of students."

Procedure
Have students make bar graphs to display information about their class. Divide students into different groups. Each group conducts a survey about their class. For example, the favorite color of the students in the class, the favorite sport, the favorite subject, and so on. Students record their data in the chart. Then they cut and paste appropriate lengths of color strips to represent the data. Groups take turns displaying the results of their survey on the bulletin board. Extend the activity by having students conduct surveys about the students in the school.
